5 Tips for Staying Motivated    Tips 1-2

To succeed in high school and college, you have to do your best at all times. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated, even when you really care about the work you’re doing. Here are five ways to stay on the right track.
1. Focus on high-impact activities
The key to success in school is staying focused on your course work. Make a list to get an overall picture of your work load before you start to tackle any of it. Then, make a plan. Although it’s tempting to do the simplest assignments first, those that make more time and effort to accomplish are probably the ones that you’ll learn the most from.
To determine what your priorities are, rank your assignments in their order of importance. Then rearrange your time and devote more energy toward those that have the greater impact on your course work and grades. For example, even though all homework assignments are important, studying for a midterm exam take priority over writing a paragraph for an English class. As you complete each task, think of it as another step on your way to college success.
2. Create new challenges
Changing your approach can help you stay interested in what you’re doing. If you’ve been given an assignment similar to one you’ve done in the past, think about it in a different way. If you wrote an essay for a creative writing assignment last year try a poem this time. For book reports, pick a history book, instead of another biography.

selecting your courses

Selecting your courses part 3

Science teaches you to think about analytically and apply theories to reality, colleges want to see that you’ve been taken at least three years of laboratory science classes. A good combinations includes two semester of each of the following sciences:

·         Biology
·         Chemistry or Physics
·         Earth/space science
·         More competitive schools expect you to take four years of lab science courses. You can add two semesters in one of the following subjects:
·         Chemistry or Physics ( the science you didn’t already study)
·         Advance biology
·         Advanced Chemistry
·         Advance Physics

7 habits of highly successful teens habit 6

Habit 6 : synergize

Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn't have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy allows teens to value differences and better appreciate others. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-Win and seeking first to understand. Learning to drop box is like learning to form V formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and father you’ll go, synergy doesn't just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: learn to celebrate differences.
A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or the sax, or the vocalist, its all of them together that make up the “sound.” Each band member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone. Not instrument is more important than another, just different.

Sarah’s Academic Success Story
Part 1

Time management became key factor in my study skills for college. In high school, there were times I was able to study for an hour or two the night before a test and get away with it. This was not the case in college. I made sure in college I was prepared for each class. Sometimes that meant writing out for the chapter we read (even while it isn’t required) to better understand them. That way when midterm or test domes around I was able to understand what I was studying. I started taking excellent notes in class in college. I may have done this in high school, but in college I started typing up the notes after class. This helped me remember what I just went over in class then when I had tested one week later I was more likely to remember then as well.
My overall study method: structured. One thing I learned  was I had to adapt or change my study method according to the class. I couldn’t study for religion class the same way I studied for a finance class. But making sure I had enough time to study for each class--even if it meant carrying a planner with me at all times was a big part of my success

Academic  success   Part 2

Laura B’s Academic Success Story
In high school I was one of the good students who didn’t really have to study to be a good student. The information that I took for notes in class usually sunk in enough for me to be able to get by on the test by simply reviewing the materials just before the class began. I wanted to see. In college however, that changed. Not only did I start studying and reading the book, but I began to understand that the little tiny facts were just as important as the general concepts. My overall study method: I do the reading that is required for the  classes, and I try to keep up. If I do fall behind, sometimes with volleyball, it’s tough because we are on the road a lot, but if I do miss class because of volleyball I make sure that I get the notes from another student in the class. Also, for a subject such as chemistry, I do practice problems to help me understand what the material means.
